Decoding Wellness Trends

Forbes recently released an article outlining "10 Wellness Trends You Have to Try in 2024," sparking both intrigue and skepticism within me. In this publication of “Bites of Wisdom”, we'll review a couple of these trends, examining both sides of the coin by debunking myths while also considering supportive perspectives.

By critically analyzing these trends, we aim to uncover the truths behind the hype and determine their potential impact on your well-being 🙂

Let’s Dive In!

What is the Vagus Nerve and how do you stimulate it?

The article mentions a huge increase in interest from the wellness community in the vagus nerve and how simple stimulation of this cranial nerve can counteract the fight-or-flight response in our body. If you've worked with me, you may recall that supporting the Vagus Nerve has been part of your wellness assignments before 😏

The vagus nerve, also known as cranial nerve ten, plays a vital role in connecting the brain, heart, lungs, and abdominal organs. As the primary component of the parasympathetic nervous system, it regulates essential functions such as breathing, heart rate, and digestion.

To enhance vagal tone, effective methods include deep breathing exercises, meditation, chanting, and humming. Consistent practice of any of these activities on a daily basis can aid in recovering from stressful situations.

What is Rucking? Should I do it?

I'm a huge fan of rucking—it's my top choice for functional training. Rucking involves walking or hiking with a heavy pack or weights. Incorporating a few minutes of rucking at the conclusion of your workouts is an excellent method for enhancing balance, core strength, and even giving your back a solid workout ;)

My preferred method is using kettlebells, holding one in each hand. For an added challenge to balance, you can also switch to alternating one-handed sets.

What are Blue Zones and why would I want to eat that diet?

The blue zone diet emphasizes reducing dairy, minimizing sugar intake, eliminating eggs, limiting fish consumption, snacking on nuts, staying hydrated with 7 glasses of water daily, incorporating beans into your diet, and focusing on whole single ingredient foods, aiming for a 95-100% plant-based approach.

Now, personally, I don't strictly adhere to this diet, but let me explain why, and then you can decide what works best for you. If you're interested in more tailored dietary recommendations, feel free to book a slot on my calendar here.

I cut down on sugar, trim dairy, take it easy on fish, snack on nuts, ensure I drink 7 glasses of water daily, and prioritize whole foods. However, I don't completely follow a 95-100% plant-based diet or consume beans daily. While I acknowledge the benefits of beans and could include them more, I find it challenging to stick to such a strict plant-based diet given my active lifestyle, fast metabolism, and condition like POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome). Daily protein intake is crucial for me and many active women, as it provides essential strength and sustenance. Plus, eggs are a convenient whole food option that simplifies my life as a busy entrepreneur.
