(VIDEO) The Body's Immune Defense System

Your Body’s Defense System— Understanding How It Works and How to Keep It Strong

In this Video you will learn:

● The basic knowledge you need on how your Body’s Defense System operates.

● Nutritional strategies you can integrate into your daily life to support it.

● Lifestyle habits you can implement to enhance its power.

Immune System 101

The immune system is what protects your body from diseases and infections. It's the bodily system that produces the immune response to defend your body from foreign substances, cells, and tissues.

11 body systems and they are ALL a part of your immune system!

Important Parts of the Immune System

  • Tonsils and Adenoids

  • Lymph nodes and Lymphatic vessels:

  • Thymus

  • Spleen

  • Peyer’s patches

  • Appendix

  • Bone marrow

Innate Vs Adaptive

The immune system is delineated into two distinct arms: innate and adaptive.

1) The innate system is comprised of nonspecific defense mechanisms that respond to pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Physical barriers (skin, mucous membranes) supply one layer of defense, while a variety of immune factors (macrophages, natural killer cells, mast cells, cytokines, complement proteins) also protect against foreign invaders.

2) The adaptive arm of the immune system is driven by t- and b-lymphocytes. These cells detect specific pathogens, secrete signaling molecules, and coordinate an immune response in the face of challenge. Upon initial interaction with a foreign microorganism, aspects of the adaptive immune system respond, developing memory for enhanced recognition during subsequent exposures. This adaptation results in a faster, more robust secondary response.

What is Humoral Immunity and Cell Mediated Immunity?

Humoral immunity is triggered by. B cells while cell mediated immunity is triggered by T cells. The main difference between humoral and cell mediated. immunity is that antigen-specific antibodies are produced in humoral immunity whereas antibodies are not. produced in cell mediated immunity.

The Innate vs. Adaptive Immune Response

It’s All about Balance

Signs and symptoms of primary immunodeficiency can include: Frequent and recurrent pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections, ear infections, meningitis or skin infections. Inflammation and infection of internal organs. Blood disorders, such as low platelet counts or anemia.
