(VIDEO) Holistic Kids Health-colds, allergies, grumpy moods, sleep issues & picky eaters
Healthy Tips & Real-Life Advice to address the common concerns facing your kiddo from colds to allergies to grumpy moods to tummy aches to sleep issues & picky eaters...

Kids and FOOD
Ice Cream is healthier than Cheerios if you make it yourself! (Protein & Fat, Sugar options)
What Parents Eat models for the kids
Pick WHOLE/REAL Foods, nutrient dense - avoid packages
Consume Water- kids don’t like it, make “slushies” - great for constipation and keeping them hydrated - or “popsicles”
SKIP FRUIT JUICE - always...it’s just sugar water, not the same benefit as whole fruit plus sugar or HFCS is added (liver health!)
KIDS WON’T STARVE, cultivate a variety of tastes, flavors, spices, (look at other cultures), plus pickled/fermented items, bitter items
HEALTHY FAT PYRAMID
MASHES, MEATLOAFS, SMOOTHIES, POPSICLES, PUREES, FUDGE….ADD GRASS FED BUTTER & SEA SALT
NATURAL KETCHUP
DON’T REWARD OR ENTERTAIN WITH FOOD - this is hard, we ALL do it, but kids are so impressionable and this is a hard habit to rewire later in life!
MAKE YOUR OWN FOOD, MAKE YOUR OWN FOOD, MAKE YOUR OWN FOOD Claudia + Sharon :)
FATS, DIPS, SPREADS, NUT BUTTERS, AVOCADO, GRASS-FED BUTTER, HEALTHY MAYO, CREAM CHEESE, COCONUT - make it yummy, nutrients dense, organic, (MAKE IT YOURSELF) and smoother over veggies, use as dips
DIP OR FAT “VEHICLE” - apple slices, celery, carrots, cucumber slices or sticks, sliced banana, jicama, thin sliced raw beets, zucchini sticks, tomato wedges, broccoli or cauliflower floret, chayote slices and much more….
NUTS & SPICES - spice nuts, or make butters, endless varieties and flavors
PREPARATION IS KEY - when we fail to prep that’s when we run for convenience - so what are your convenience items? (ex. PaleoValley GF Beef sticks) or decadent treat (ex. Pressed Juicery)
TEACH THE KIDS SIMPLE FOOD PREP - start this VERY YOUNG so they are NOT limited and can’t whine that there is “nothing to eat” if they know how to open fridge and crab sliced apple and almond butter or cubes of cheese, etc.
STEPPING UP YOUR GAME? If you are creative consider making homemade chips (options: sweet potato, cassava, carrots, zucchini, kale etc) & your own DESSERTS (shake examples, fudge, cookies etc)
EGGS - incredible health food for kids & variety of ways to prepare them!
SOCIAL, NO SCREENS, CONVERSATION, MINDFUL - you will be giving the best gift to yourself and kids if you follow this at mealtimes - keep in mind - it’s HARD to do this if you weren’t raised with it just keep in mind however hard it is for you it will later be natural for your kids!

Functional Medicine/Health Testing Options
The following tests are available and ordered for the patient as needed. Please reach out to us with any questions. We will review lab reports brought in from other providers and endeavor to only order tests when absolutely indicated to keep patient costs low. We have also made arrangements with the lab companies for the lowest prices available and pass those savings on to our patients.
There are many health benefits that can occur with the correct diet, lifestyle changes and a few key nutrients, supplements or herbs and we are happy to advise accordingly. For patients desiring a more complete functional assessment, we include the appropriate laboratory testing based on the patient’s current complaints. During the Report of Findings (ROF) visit, we will provide a full functional analysis based on the patient’s history, exam, nutrition testing & laboratory findings that will consider the WHOLE picture and best recommendations on how to move forward.
One or two of the test items below may be needed to help determine the functional cause of the following symptoms:
Fatigue
Weight gain/loss
Low mood/sad
Anxious feelings
Brain fog
Gas
Bloating
Reflux
Food reactivity
Diarrhea
Constipation
Skin issues
Irritability
Insomnia
Muscle aches/pain
Searching “Dr. Google” will provide you with a month’s worth of reading from highly technical research articles to unreliable blog posts or the inevitable “you might have this disease” fear-driven article. For those that prefer to KNOW what’s going and get clear guidance, we recommend a full assessment with 1-2 of the following tests as needed.
ADVANCED GUT HEALTH TESTS
SIBO Breath Test
The 3-hour SIBO Lactulose Breath Test is the best non-invasive test to order to determine if
Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is present. SIBO affects over 50% of people who’s digestive symptoms can be labeled as IBS. Common symptoms include bloating, painful gas, diarrhea, constipation, intestinal hyperpermeability (aka “leaky gut”), and acid reflux. This condition can also contribute greatly to mental health issues (depression/anxiety), skin issues (acne, eczema, rashes, hives), muscle aches/pain, weight gain and/or insulin resistance.
If any of this seems to fit your circumstances, we highly recommend you watch the basic and advanced Gut Health classes taught by Dr. Zachary and if needed, order the SIBO breath test.
We use the Genova 3-Hour Lactulose breath test and typical cost is about $220. Contact the office for exact pricing. We will interpret test results from other offices or labs but HIGHLY encourage you to make sure it is the 3-Hour Lactulose test so it will show the transit from the small intestines to the colon.
GI-MAP Stool Test
This is a DNA-PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test that amplifies DNA to identify pathogens and is more highly sensitive and reliable than the old stool tests that relied on a lab tech to identify visible live organisms under a microscope. This test has an excellent track record for picking up parasites, bacteria, worms, other pathogens plus digestive markers for dysbiosis, inflammation, etc.
Although this lab will test stool for yeast/fungal strains, it often does not pick them up because it is difficult to detect. When fungal/yeast (ex. Candida) is suspected we recommend the OATs urine test.
Typical cost is around $340. Call the office for exact pricing.
OAT (Organic Acid Test) Urine test
This is our “go-to” test to truly determine if yeast (ex. Candida) is present. Yeast can often hide in stool especially if it is a long-term case where it is growing into the tissue of the intestines and not on the surface. The OAT will show the markers of fungal waste products (that our human cells do NOT produce) and then we will know the yeast is present.
Additionally, the OAT will demonstrate many other key markers including dysbiosis, mitochondrial function, clostridia markers, oxalates, neurotransmitters (ex. serotonin), nutritional deficiencies and more. Please see our detailed post regarding the many benefits of the OAT for more information.
Lastly, it is safe for all ages and easy urine test that is completed at home and mailed to the lab. Typical cost is about $300. Call the office for exact pricing.
BLOOD LAB TESTING
Thyroid, Heart, Liver & General Health Blood Tests
We always compare the “conventional medical range” and the “functional lab range” when we analyze blood labs and often provide information and a detailed description that is very revealing and new to our patients because once you look for more than just “disease” from blood labs you can assess a great deal about the functional health and nutritional wellness for the patient. If thyroid issues are present or suspected we will order a full thyroid panel and also order a complete and advanced heart health panel. Frequently a CBC w/differential and CMP will also be ordered and other select labs as needed (ex. Uric Acid, vitamin D, iron panel, etc).
You will always be provided a copy of your lab results to share with your other practitioners and PCP.
We typically order blood labs either through Spectracell or LabCorp and have negotiated the lowest prices available and pass those savings on to our patients. We are also happy to analyze blood labs brought in by the patient providing they are recent enough and include the blood markers needed.
Typical cost vary ranging from $50-200 depending on what the patient needs. Average cost is $135. Contact the office for exact pricing.
OTHER LAB TESTS
Other labs may be ordered as needed on a case-by-case basis including the following: Dunwoody Labs (blood test for “leaky gut” particularly measuring histamine, DAO, LPS, zonulin, etc) typical cost $350. Contact the office for exact pricing.
Analytical Research Labs (hair tissue test for overall wellness, heavy metals, mineral levels) typical cost $85. Contact the office for exact pricing.
Cyrex Labs (blood test for food allergies/cross-reactivity, etc) cost range from $225-$500+. Contact the office for exact pricing.
Epstein-Barr Virus Full Panel (blood lab to demonstrate current, past or reactivation of virus) typical cost $100. Contact the office for exact pricing.
Igenex Lyme Testing (blood lab testing for Lyme antigens) cost range from $100+. Contact the office for exact pricing.
