(VIDEO) Gut Disorders Meal Plan -SIBO, SIFO, Candida, IBS
Gut Health is easy to overlook until there is a problem. Once that happens, what seemed to start out as "simple" constipation or acid reflux or loose stool or irregular bowels can quickly escalate into a disease with dire consequences. Gut and Bowel Health can impact not only your daily lifestyle but also severely compromise your immune system, your hormonal health, your mood, ability to concentrate & create feelings of anxiety

Make sure you work with a functional health practitioner you trust and the more severe Gut Disorders may require a team of professionals. Get assessed, get a plan for treatment, get reevaluated and be prepared to do the work to get better.
Some of the common Gut Disorders you will run into is a generic diagnosis for IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), more specific diagnoses of SIBO (Small Intestinal Bowel Overgrowth) and/or SIFO (Small Intestinal Fungal Overgrowth) -of which the most common is Candida (systemic Yeast overgrowth). A consequence of these conditions is often "Leaky Gut" aka Intestinal Hyperpermeability plus a host of food sensitivities and allergies.
The cause and/or co-morbidities with these conditions include everything from a prolonged stress response to antibiotic overuse (dysbiosis) to slowed gut motility to pelvic floor dysfunction to surgical adhesions to redundant bowel...the list goes on and on. It will require much effort/education on your part to resolve but the relief and results are worth it!
There is no doubt that at some point in your healing you will be required to make massive dietary changes. Below is a Severe Gut Disorders Meal Plan that we have found helpful in our office. It is based on Dr. Zachary's personal and clinical experience and builds on the work of other SIBO/Gut Health pioneers including Dr. Siebeckers Low FODMAP/SCD diet and Drs Piminental & Ruscio's low fermentable/low residual recommendations.
Dr. Zachary created this meal plan so you would have one list that could be used for a multitude of Severe Gut Disorders and merely make modifications as needed. Please keep in mind the instructions as listed on the Meal Plan and work with your qualified health professional.
A few points to remember:
For the most sensitive, start in the Highly Sensitive column only. For less severe cases eat out of both green columns (Highly Sensitive & Sensitive). Only move into the yellow Test As Feeling Better column when advised by your healthcare provider to do so or once symptoms are largely resolved.
If you have SIFO/Candida or severe blood sugar balancing issues you may want to skip fruit.
Severe SIBO may need to skip dairy, nut/seed, legume categories until further into treatment - ask your healthcare provider.
Rarely will the meal plan alone resolve your severe gut health issue. It is an essential component but you will likely need 1 or more of the following treatments: Herbal antibiotics/antimicrobials, Rx antibiotics/antimicrobials, Elemental Diet, Prokinetics, Digestive aid, Stress management/biofeedback tools, bodywork, etc. Get a clear treatment plan with your doc.
If any food item is sensitive for YOU, regardless of what column it is in, leave it out for now.
We know that dealing with Gut Health issues can be a daunting process often involving years of treatment, but hang in there - you can do this!
